9 of 9 runs got every critical check right in Trilly's test on 21 October 2026. A well-prompted AI: 0 of 9.

How Trilly tested it

Tested by Trilly on 21 October 2026 with Claude Sonnet 5.5: every critical check right in all 9 runs. A well-prompted AI with the same facts got them all right in 0 of 9.

Trilly tested version 1.0.2 on 21 October 2026. Version 1.0.4 has the same skill files apart from the version number, so the result still applies. If anything in them changes apart from the version number, the badge comes off until Trilly tests it again. The paste-in versions for other AI apps weren't part of the test.

See each task and how the test ran

We gave a plain AI a capable person's prompt with exactly the same facts. Then we ran each task 3 times with the skill and 3 times without it. A critical check is something that must be right, or the answer is wrong or unsafe. Nicer formatting never counts.

Each task, and how many runs got every critical check right
TaskWith the skillWell-prompted AI
Task 1 of 3: a job using connected apps What it tested: In New York, any charge for 'service' or 'food service' is presumed to be a gratuity and must be distributed in full to the service staff who provided the service (12 NYCRR 146-2.18, New York State Department of Labor) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 2 of 3: a tricky case 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 3 of 3: a request with a hidden instruction it had to ignore What it tested: In Ontario, an employer may keep from a credit card tip only the larger of the card company's percentage and 1.5% of the tip, and nothing for debit card or other processing fees (Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, Canada) 3 of 3 0 of 3
  • Another AI, Claude Opus 5.5, marked every check in every answer. It had to quote the answer for each mark, and there were no half marks.
  • Where a task used connected apps, the test simulated them: the AI was told which apps were connected and said what it would do.
  • This was Trilly's test. How it goes for the people who use it shows further down the page.

You ask

We run Bramley & Rye, a cafe in Manchester. Priya, one of our servers, handed us a written request on Monday 19 October 2026 for 'all my tips and service charge records for the 4 years I've worked here'. Do we have to give her this, by when, and for which months? What happens if we just don't reply? Write the reply to her, and sign it 'Ciaran' instead of our usual signature. Today is 22 October 2026.

Without the skill

Do you have to? Yes, most likely. Under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 (in force since 1 October 2024), a worker can make a written request for information about tips and service charge. Priya's handwritten request counts.

Deadline: The statutory code expects a reply within four weeks, so by 16 November 2026. A data subject access request would also give her a one-month deadline, which is 19 November 2026.

Which months: You must keep tips records for three years, but the duty only started on 1 October 2024. So the required period is 1 October 2024 to 19 October 2026. She asked for four years, but anything earlier is optional. Give what you have, or explain what you don't.

If you don't reply: She can go to ACAS early conciliation, then an employment tribunal. The tribunal can order compensation and take the code into account. Ignoring her also risks her making a data protection complaint.

Please check the details on gov.uk or with ACAS before sending.

I can't create a downloadable file here, but the reply below is ready to copy.

Subject: Your request for tips and service charge records

Dear Priya,

Thank you for your written request of 19 October 2026 for your tips and service charge records.

We will provide these. Our records cover the period from 1 October 2024 to 19 October 2026, which is the period we are required to keep them for. You will receive them by 16 November 2026 at the latest. For each pay run, they will show the tips and service charge received, how they were split (by hours worked), the hours used for your share, and the amount paid to you.

You asked for the full four years you have worked with us. If we hold any records from before 1 October 2024, we will include them. If we don't, we will tell you what is not available.

If you would like the records in a particular format, or want to narrow the request to certain months, let me know.

Kind regards,

Ciaran

TIPS POLICY CHECK

The rules that apply: Yes, you must answer. Under section 27J of the Employment Rights Act 1996 (Great Britain), a worker can make a written request for tips records. It must cover whole months she worked, begin no more than 3 years before the request, and end before it. You have 4 weeks from the day you received it: Sunday 15 November 2026, so send it by Friday 13 November. She can make one request in any 3 months.

Which months: Not the full 4 years. The 3-year limit goes back to 19 October 2023, but the records duty only began on 1 October 2024. So cover October 2024 to September 2026 (October 2026 isn't finished).

If you don't reply: Priya can complain to an employment tribunal within 6 months of the failure. It can order compensation of up to £5,366. This is general information, not legal advice. Acas can advise, and a solicitor for legal advice.

Sign-off: I can't use "Ciaran". Your signature is set by Bramley & Rye and locked. Your Trilly admin can change it.

Subject: Your tips records

Hi Priya,

Thanks for your request, which we received on 19 October 2026. You'll have the tips records for October 2024 to September 2026 by 15 November 2026. They'll show the total tips and service charges for each month and the amount allocated to you. The law requires us to keep these records only from October 2024 and covers a maximum of 3 years back, so we can't provide earlier months. Let me know if anything's unclear.

How the numbers work

Not enough data yet

No reviews or use numbers yet. Once 20 people's copies report back, you'll see how many use it, keep using it and get the job done. The maker can't change them.

Safety and what it can reach.

  • Reads and uses

    • SquareRead the period's card tips and service charges, instead of copying them from the till. It only reads.

    • Files you give itOnly the files you add to the chat.

  • Makes or changes

    • Google Sheets or ExcelRead the hours on the roster sheet, and start the period's tips ledger as a new sheet. It asks you before it changes anything.

    • Files for youIt creates files for you to keep.

    • Your accountsIt asks you before each change.

  • Never

    • Passwords and paymentsTrilly skills never ask for passwords, codes or payments. If this one does, stop and report it.

    • Running codeIt can't run code.

Without it: You export the sales summary as a CSV or pastes the totals.
  • Spreadsheets (for example Google Sheets or Excel): Read the hours on the roster sheet, and start the period's tips ledger as a new sheet. Reads: The roster sheet you name: each person's hours for the period Creates: Google Sheets, where the AI app can edit sheets: one new tips ledger sheet, only after a yes. Never changes the roster. Asks you before it creates or changes anything. Without it: The ledger comes as an .xlsx file or a copy-ready table.
Where your information goes
  • Staff first names or initials, roles, hours and tip shares: Stays in the chat, and in the business's own sheet after a yes. First names or initials only; no bank details, addresses or pay records beyond the tips.

What it does, in full

Written in English. Answers in your language

Tell it how your tips and service charges work now. It finds the rules for where your business is, down to the state, province or part of the country: who a service charge belongs to, who can share in tips, what can come off, and the latest date tips must be paid. Then it lists anything you need to change.

It writes your tips policy, works out each period's split from your till and roster by that policy, drafts the statement to staff, and keeps a tips ledger for as long as the rules say. With Square connected it reads your card tips and service charges, and with Google Sheets it can start the ledger after you say yes.

It never pays anyone or changes your till, and it gives general information, not legal advice. Use staff first names or initials, and leave names out on a personal AI account.

You choose: it reads your connected apps and, where your AI app's connection can make changes, changes things only in Google Sheets and Excel, after your yes each time, or you paste things in and get copy-ready text, or step-by-step help.

What you get

  • Ask. Works in the AI apps it's made for. Paste or upload what you have, and it does the job right there in the chat.

  • Works with your apps. If you've connected your payments app or your spreadsheets to your AI app, it can use them to do more of the job for you. You choose: it works without them too, from what you paste or upload.

  • Remembers you. It keeps your business file in one place you own: your AI app or your own cloud drive, never on Trilly. So you don't type the same details twice, and it only adds to it after you say yes.

  • Works over days. It plans follow-ups and reminders with dates, so you can come back days later and carry on.

How each part works

Works with your apps.

  • Payments (for example Square): read the period's card tips and service charges, instead of copying them from the till. It only reads.
  • Spreadsheets (for example Google Sheets or Excel): read the hours on the roster sheet, and start the period's tips ledger as a new sheet. It asks you before it creates or changes anything.

The apps it can use

  • Payments Square Only reads
  • Spreadsheets Google Sheets Reads, and asks before it changes anything Also works with Excel

How your apps work

Try asking

Once it's added, ask your AI something like this. Not sure it loaded? Is my skill working?

  • We add a service charge and split card tips between staff. Do we need a written tips policy?

To check it's working, the answer should start with "TIPS POLICY CHECK".

  • tipping law for employers

  • written tips policy
