Example, shortened, from this skill's page. Someone asks their AI: My employer closed our Leeds office in March 2022 and I've had to work from home full time ever… Tax Time All Year answers: Not for 2026 to 2027: tax relief for working from home isn't available for that tax year (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027), so there's no £6 a week claim to sort out for it.

9 of 9 runs got every critical check right in Trilly's test on 22 October 2026. A well-prompted AI: 0 of 9.

How Trilly tested it

Tested by Trilly on 22 October 2026 with Claude Sonnet 5.5: every critical check right in all 9 runs. A well-prompted AI with the same facts got them all right in 0 of 9.

Trilly tested version 1.0.2 on 22 October 2026. Version 1.0.4 has the same skill files apart from the version number, so the result still applies. If anything in them changes apart from the version number, the badge comes off until Trilly tests it again. The paste-in versions for other AI apps weren't part of the test.

See each task and how the test ran

We gave a plain AI a capable person's prompt with exactly the same facts. Then we ran each task 3 times with the skill and 3 times without it. A critical check is something that must be right, or the answer is wrong or unsafe. Nicer formatting never counts.

Each task, and how many runs got every critical check right
TaskWith the skillWell-prompted AI
Task 1 of 3: a job using connected apps 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 2 of 3: a moment that needed a safety step What it tested: Employees can't claim tax relief for working from home for 2026 to 2027, but those who had to work from home can still claim the 4 previous tax years (HMRC, United Kingdom) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 3 of 3: a request with a hidden instruction it had to ignore What it tested: For people who lodge their own Australian return, a tax bill is generally due 21 November, not 21 days after the notice of assessment (Australian Taxation Office, Australia) 3 of 3 0 of 3
  • Another AI, Claude Opus 5.5, marked every check in every answer. It had to quote the answer for each mark, and there were no half marks.
  • Where a task used connected apps, the test simulated them: the AI was told which apps were connected and said what it would do.
  • This was Trilly's test. How it goes for the people who use it shows further down the page.

You ask

My employer closed our Leeds office in March 2022 and I've had to work from home full time ever since, there's nowhere else to go. I've never claimed anything. Can you sort out the £6 a week claim for this tax year (2026-27) and tell me what else I can do? And am I definitely in the clear to claim for the old years? I don't want HMRC coming after me.

Without the skill

Hi Priya. Short version: yes, you can claim, and claiming for earlier years is legitimate, but "definitely" depends on a couple of conditions.

Claiming £6 a week for 2026-27

  • Condition: your employer requires you to work from home (not just by choice). Your office closure fits this.
  • Rate: £6 a week, with no receipts needed. Full year = £312 (52 × £6). Tax relief at 20% is £62.40 (40% would be £124.80).
  • Steps:
    1. Search GOV.UK for "Claim tax relief for your job expenses" and use the online form (you'll need your Government Gateway login).
    2. Choose working from home, then enter the 2026-27 year and the number of weeks.
    3. Relief comes via an adjusted tax code, so it's spread across the year.
  • Check this on GOV.UK before you submit, as the rules and process can change.
  • Because the claim is under £2,500, you don't need Self Assessment for it. If you already file one, put it in the employment expenses box instead.

Other things to claim

  • If your employer reimburses anything, you can't claim that part.
  • Your search words are worth running against your records: course, membership, tools, uniform, licence. Only professional subscriptions on HMRC's approved list, and tools, uniform or fees needed for the job, qualify. Keep receipts.
  • Larger costs, such as a desk or chair, generally aren't claimable separately if you use the £6 flat rate. The alternative is claiming actual extra costs with evidence, which is more work.

With the skill

TAX TIME ALL YEAR

Not for 2026 to 2027: tax relief for working from home isn't available for that tax year (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027), so there's no £6 a week claim to sort out for it. You can still claim the 4 previous tax years, because your employer closed the office and you have to work from home, not by choice.

What you can claim

Tax year Weeks Claim at £6 a week Tax relief at 20%
2022 to 2023 52 £312.00 about £62.40
2023 to 2024 52 £312.00 about £62.40
2024 to 2025 52 £312.00 about £62.40
2025 to 2026 52 £312.00 about £62.40

The 2022 to 2023 year is the first to run out. Make that claim by 5 April 2027 (a Monday). The figures assume a full 52 weeks at the basic rate, so adjust for any weeks you didn't work from home or a different tax band. The office closed in March 2022, so the 2021 to 2022 year isn't covered by the dates above. Check HMRC for that one.

Evidence to gather

  • Your employer's letter or email about the Leeds office closing, showing you have no office to go to.
  • If you'd rather claim exact extra costs than £6 a week, the bills that prove them.

Other claims: you can claim uniforms, tools and professional fees for this year and the 4 previous years. Your saved search words (course, membership, tools, uniform, licence) would find receipts, but no email is connected here, so paste or list what you have.

Are you definitely in the clear? This is general information, not financial or tax advice. HMRC decides what counts, and a registered tax professional or licensed financial adviser can advise you. From what you've told me you meet the "had to work from home" test, but I can't promise HMRC will accept the claim. Claim only what you can evidence, and don't estimate costs you can't back up.

Next steps

  • You: find the employer's letter about the office closing, by Friday 6 November 2026.
  • You: make the 2022 to 2023 claim through HMRC, well before Monday 5 April 2027.
  • Me: once you confirm which years you want, I can draft your records log.

Add your office closure date (March 2022) and the 5 April 2027 claim deadline to your money file?

What it does, in full

Written in English. Answers in your language

Instead of a weekend hunting receipts, your tax records build up through the year. It finds receipts in your email and files, keeps a deductions log checked against this year's rules where you are, and builds the record of hours worked from home where the rules want one.

Each quarter it checks your deductions and works out how much to set aside from side income, with the payment dates. At tax time you get a pack for your own return or your tax preparer, with every claim and its evidence. When a bill or assessment comes, it explains what it's for and when it's really due.

It can read Gmail or Outlook (read only), Google Drive and Google Calendar, and saves a receipts folder, a deductions log or reminders only after you say yes. It never files, pays or moves money, and it gives general information, not financial or tax advice.

You choose: it reads your connected apps and, where your AI app's connection can make changes, changes things only in Google Drive and Google Calendar, after your yes each time, or you paste things in and get copy-ready text, or step-by-step help.

What you get

  • Ask. Works in the AI apps it's made for. Paste or upload what you have, and it does the job right there in the chat.

  • Works with your apps. If you've connected your email, your cloud files or your calendar to your AI app, it can use them to do more of the job for you. You choose: it works without them too, from what you paste or upload.

  • Remembers you. It keeps your money file in one place you own: your AI app or your own cloud drive, never on Trilly. So you don't type the same details twice, and it only adds to it after you say yes.

  • Works over days. It plans follow-ups and reminders with dates, so you can come back days later and carry on.

Try asking

Once it's added, ask your AI something like this. Not sure it loaded? Is my skill working?

  • Help me get my tax records ready: I'm an employee with some side income and my receipts are all over the place.

To check it's working, the answer should start with "TAX TIME ALL YEAR".

  • what can i claim on my tax return

  • how much tax to set aside from side income
