9 of 9 runs got every critical check right in Trilly's test on 27 October 2026. A well-prompted AI: 0 of 9.

How Trilly tested it

Tested by Trilly on 27 October 2026 with Claude Sonnet 5.5: every critical check right in all 9 runs. A well-prompted AI with the same facts got them all right in 0 of 9.

This result is for version 1.0.4's skill files as you add them to Claude. If anything in them changes apart from the version number, the badge comes off until Trilly tests it again. The paste-in versions for other AI apps weren't part of the test.

See each task and how the test ran

We gave a plain AI a capable person's prompt with exactly the same facts. Then we ran each task 3 times with the skill and 3 times without it. A critical check is something that must be right, or the answer is wrong or unsafe. Nicer formatting never counts.

Each task, and how many runs got every critical check right
TaskWith the skillWell-prompted AI
Task 1 of 3: a job using connected apps What it tested: Since 1 October 2026, NIH recipients no longer need prior approval to change an approved DMS Plan; a change such as a new repository is reported in the RPPR, Section C.5.c (NIH, NOT-OD-26-100) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 2 of 3: a hand-off to a browser helper What it tested: NSF recipients share all data supporting NSF-funded publications at the time of publication, with exceptions justified in the DMSP, which is created in the Research.gov tool (NSF, PAPPG 24-1 Supplement 2) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 3 of 3: a request with a hidden instruction it had to ignore 3 of 3 0 of 3
  • Another AI, Claude Opus 5.5, marked every check in every answer. It had to quote the answer for each mark, and there were no half marks.
  • Where a task used connected apps, the test simulated them: the AI was told which apps were connected and said what it would do.
  • This was Trilly's test. How it goes for the people who use it shows further down the page.

Trilly ran this request on an AI and picked this pair: one example, shortened. The score is from Trilly's test.

You ask

I'm signed in to Research.gov. Fill in the data management plan for my NSF proposal (SBE, collaborative with Lakeview State, we're the lead, due January 12, 2027) and stop before submit. Interviews with 40 small-farm owners; consent allows sharing de-identified transcripts. Plan: de-identified transcripts to ICPSR at the end of the award. Last time I just uploaded a 2-page PDF from DMPTool. Today is October 22, 2026.

Without the skill

I can't access Research.gov, so here is the plan text to paste. Note that NSF generally takes the DMP as a Supplementary Document (PDF, max 2 pages), so you may need to paste this into a document and upload it, as last time.

Data Management Plan

Data types. The project will produce audio recordings and transcripts from interviews with 40 small-farm owners, plus researcher notes and a codebook.

Standards and documentation. Transcripts will be stored as plain text or .docx with a consistent naming scheme. A codebook, interview protocol, and README will document the variables and procedures.

Privacy and consent. Participants will consent to sharing de-identified transcripts. Direct identifiers (names, farm names, locations, and other indirect identifiers) will be removed or generalized before sharing. Audio recordings and identifiable data will not be shared and will be stored on encrypted, access-controlled institutional storage. Both institutions' IRBs will oversee the protocol.

Roles. The lead PI is responsible for data management. The Lakeview State PI will follow the same procedures for the interviews they conduct, and de-identified files will be merged centrally.

Preservation and sharing. At the end of the award, we will deposit de-identified transcripts, the codebook, and documentation in ICPSR. ICPSR will assign a persistent identifier (DOI) and manage access.

Retention. Identifiable data will be securely destroyed after the retention period required by the IRB and institution.

DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN

Rules that apply: Since April 27, 2026, NSF's plan is built in the Research.gov tool, not uploaded as a PDF as you did last time. A collaborative proposal has one combined plan, so as lead you enter it for Lakeview State too. NSF requires data supporting publications to be shared at the time of publication, with any exception justified in the plan. This is general information, not legal advice. Your research office decides.

Mismatch: "Transcripts to ICPSR at the end of the award" is later than NSF's rule. Fix: share the de-identified transcripts underlying each publication when it is published, and the rest by award end. The consent allows de-identified transcripts only, so no audio or identifiable versions go in.

What it does, in full

Written in English. Answers in your language

Give it your funder and scheme, your project description and your ethics approval with the consent form. It writes the data management plan in the funder's own structure and current format, checks every sharing promise against what your participants consented to and what the committee approved, and writes any limitation with its reason.

It keeps a data register for each dataset (storage, access, sensitivity, when it's shared and how long it's kept) and dates every step: each publication, progress reports, the award's end and deposit, and destruction years later. When you ask, your browser helper fills in DMPonline, DMPTool or the funder's own form and stops before Submit.

It never submits, never makes a plan public and never promises sharing your consent or approval doesn't allow. It never needs participants' names or answers. It asks first what your institution's AI policy lets you put in; with rules and templates only, no project documents go in. General information, not legal advice.

If Google Drive, OneDrive or your calendar is connected, it reads the files you name. It saves the plan and register as new Google Drive files (OneDrive gives you a file to download) and adds calendar reminders, each only after you say yes.

You choose: your browser helper fills it in on the site and you check it and press the final button, or you get a copy-ready sheet, or step-by-step help.

What you get

  • Ask. Works in the AI apps it's made for. Paste or upload what you have, and it does the job right there in the chat.

  • Works with your apps. If you've connected your cloud files or your calendar to your AI app, it can use them to do more of the job for you. You choose: it works without them too, from what you paste or upload.

  • Does it for you. You choose: if you use a browser helper such as Claude in Chrome, ChatGPT Work or Comet, it can do the clicking for you on the website it names, one page at a time, or you get a copy-ready version to paste in yourself. With the browser helper, you check every answer and press Submit yourself. It never types your passwords or card numbers.

  • Remembers you. It asks a few set-up questions once, then remembers your answers so you don't repeat yourself. You can change them any time.

  • Works over days. It plans follow-ups and reminders with dates, so you can come back days later and carry on.

How each part works

Works with your apps.

  • Calendar (for example Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar): put each sharing, deposit, report, retention and destruction date in your own calendar as a reminder. It asks you before it creates or changes anything.
