Example, shortened, from this skill's page. Someone asks their AI: Level 3 apprenticeship, funding band maximum £5,000. We plan 400 off-the-job hours for a learner… RPL Evidence Mapping and Decision Record answers: Minimum reduction: £1,000, so the price is at most £4,000. Prior learning: 160 ÷ 400 = 40%.; Reduce the price by at least 50% of that: 20%.; 20% of £5,000 = £1,000, leaving £4,000 at most (DfE funding rules 2026….

How Trilly tested it

Tested by Trilly on 22 October 2026 with Claude Sonnet 5.5: every critical check right in all 9 runs. A well-prompted AI with the same facts got them all right in 0 of 9.

Trilly tested version 1.0.0 on 22 October 2026. Version 1.0.2 has the same skill files apart from the version number, so the result still applies. If anything in them changes apart from the version number, the badge comes off until Trilly tests it again. The paste-in versions for other AI apps weren't part of the test.

See each task and how the test ran

We gave a plain AI a capable person's prompt with exactly the same facts. Then we ran each task 3 times with the skill and 3 times without it. A critical check is something that must be right, or the answer is wrong or unsafe. Nicer formatting never counts.

Each task, and how many runs got every critical check right
TaskWith the skillWell-prompted AI
Task 1 of 3: a job using connected apps What it tested: Credit transfer applies only to an equivalent unit (the same code, or a superseded unit listed as equivalent on the National Register); a non-equivalent unit goes to RPL (ASQA, Standard 1.7 practice guide) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 2 of 3: a request with a hidden instruction it had to ignore What it tested: Advanced standing or credit for experience is granted for all applicants equally, with commensurate wages for any progression step granted (U.S. Department of Labor, 29 CFR 29.5(b)(12)) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 3 of 3: a tricky case What it tested: Prior learning cuts the price by at least 50% of the prior learning percentage from the funding band maximum, and less than 8 months or 187 hours left makes the apprentice ineligible (Department for Education, funding rules 2026 to 2027) 3 of 3 0 of 3
  • Another AI, Claude Opus 5.5, marked every check in every answer. It had to quote the answer for each mark, and there were no half marks.
  • Where a task used connected apps, the test simulated them: the AI was told which apps were connected and said what it would do.
  • This was Trilly's test. How it goes for the people who use it shows further down the page.

You ask

Level 3 apprenticeship, funding band maximum £5,000. We plan 400 off-the-job hours for a learner with no prior learning. Jade, 24, has 2 years as an office junior and her skills scan shows 160 of those hours are already covered. What's the minimum price reduction? Her employer, Linden Dental Group, wants to cut her to 150 hours. Draft a short email to their HR manager, Priya, explaining both, and sign it 'Sam, Apprenticeships Team' for this one.

Without the skill

Working

  • Prior learning covered: 160 of 400 hours = 40%
  • Minimum price reduction: 40% × £5,000 = £2,000, giving a maximum price of £3,000
  • Remaining off-the-job hours: 400 − 160 = 240

This assumes a proportionate reduction, which is the usual approach. Please check it against the current funding rules and your own RPL policy. The employer's 150 hours would be 90 below the 240 the skills scan supports, so I've said we can't agree it without further evidence. Also check that 240 hours still meets the 20% minimum for Jade's contracted hours.

Subject: Jade's apprenticeship: price and off-the-job hours

Dear Priya,

Thank you for your note about Jade's Level 3 apprenticeship. I'd like to explain two points.

1. Price reduction Jade's skills scan shows that 160 of the 400 planned off-the-job hours are already covered by her two years' experience. That is 40% of the programme. We must reduce the price in line with this, so the price drops from the £5,000 funding band maximum by at least £2,000, to a maximum of £3,000.

2. Off-the-job hours We understand Linden Dental Group would like to reduce Jade's hours to 150. Based on the skills scan, her plan is 240 hours (400 less the 160 already covered). We can't go below this without evidence of further prior learning. Off-the-job training must also meet the minimum funding requirement of at least 20% of Jade's working hours during the practical period.

If you think Jade has additional experience that isn't reflected in the scan, please send us supporting evidence, such as examples of work or a reference. We would then review it and adjust the plan and price if appropriate.

It would help to hear from you by 29 October 2026 so we can finalise the plan. I'm happy to talk it through by phone if that's easier.

Kind regards,

Sam, Apprenticeships Team

RPL EVIDENCE MAPPING

Minimum reduction: £1,000, so the price is at most £4,000.

  • Prior learning: 160 ÷ 400 = 40%.
  • Reduce the price by at least 50% of that: 20%.
  • 20% of £5,000 = £1,000, leaving £4,000 at most (DfE funding rules 2026 to 2027, paragraph 39.3). That's the starting point for any further price negotiation.

Linden's 150 hours:

  • Jade's scan evidences 160 hours of prior learning, so 240 hours remain.
  • Cutting to 150 hours would remove 250 hours, which is 90 more than the scan supports.
  • With less than 8 months or 187 hours of content left, she would be ineligible for funding (paragraph 39.1.1). 150 hours falls below that, while 240 is above it.
  • Any further reduction needs evidence mapped to the standard's knowledge, skills and behaviours.

This is general information, not legal advice. The Department for Education and your funding body decide how the rules apply.

Subject: Jade's apprenticeship: prior learning and price

Hi Priya,

Jade's skills scan shows 160 of the 400 planned off-the-job hours are already covered by her two years' office experience. That is 40% prior learning, so the funding rules require a price reduction of at least 20%. On the £5,000 band maximum, that is £1,000 off, so £4,000 at most.

I understand Linden would like to cut her to 150 hours. We can only remove content her evidence supports, and the scan supports 160 hours, leaving 240. Funding also isn't available if fewer than 187 hours (or 8 months) of content remain, and 150 hours would fall below that.

If Jade has further evidence, such as work samples or a reference from her manager, we can map it against the standard and review. Could you let me know by Thursday 29 October 2026 whether you'd like to do that?

What it does, in full

Written in English. Answers in your language

Give it the units and a candidate's portfolio, or let it open the folder the candidate shared. It checks credit transfer first, then maps every piece of evidence to each line of each unit and tests it against the rules of evidence: valid, sufficient, authentic and current. It flags every gap and suggests the gap training.

It drafts the referee verification requests with dated follow-ups, the competency conversation questions and the observation plan, and keeps the decision record and a tracker. It works out what prior learning changes for an apprentice: the plan, the price or the wage step, with the rules for where you deliver training.

It drafts; the assessor decides. It never writes a candidate's evidence or decides competence, and candidates appear only as first names or codes. It asks first what your organisation's AI policy lets you share; with units and templates only, no evidence goes in.

It can read the portfolio from OneDrive, SharePoint or Google Drive, add the matrix to Google Sheets, book the conversation in your calendar and save referee requests as Outlook drafts. It asks first and never sends.

You choose: it reads your connected apps and, where your AI app's connection can make changes, changes things only in Google Sheets, Excel, Google Calendar and Outlook, after your yes each time, or you paste things in and get copy-ready text, or step-by-step help.

What you get

  • Ask. Works in the AI apps it's made for. Paste or upload what you have, and it does the job right there in the chat.

  • Works with your apps. If you've connected your cloud files, your spreadsheets, your calendar or your email to your AI app, it can use them to do more of the job for you. You choose: it works without them too, from what you paste or upload.

  • Remembers you. It asks a few set-up questions once, then remembers your answers so you don't repeat yourself. You can change them any time.

  • Works over days. It plans follow-ups and reminders with dates, so you can come back days later and carry on.
