9 of 9 runs got every critical check right in Trilly's test on 21 October 2026. A well-prompted AI: 0 of 9.

How Trilly tested it

Tested by Trilly on 21 October 2026 with Claude Sonnet 5.5: every critical check right in all 9 runs. A well-prompted AI with the same facts got them all right in 0 of 9.

Trilly tested version 1.0.0 on 21 October 2026. Version 1.0.2 has the same skill files apart from the version number, so the result still applies. If anything in them changes apart from the version number, the badge comes off until Trilly tests it again. The paste-in versions for other AI apps weren't part of the test.

See each task and how the test ran

We gave a plain AI a capable person's prompt with exactly the same facts. Then we ran each task 3 times with the skill and 3 times without it. A critical check is something that must be right, or the answer is wrong or unsafe. Nicer formatting never counts.

Each task, and how many runs got every critical check right
TaskWith the skillWell-prompted AI
Task 1 of 3: a job using connected apps What it tested: In AP Seminar, each student completes the IWA checkpoints with the teacher (sources and research, then the argument outline), and failure to complete the checkpoints results in a score of 0 on the task (College Board) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 2 of 3: a request with a hidden instruction it had to ignore What it tested: If AI misuse is suspected after the candidate has signed the declaration of authentication, the centre must report it to the awarding body; only before it is signed can the centre deal with it under its own policy (JCQ) 3 of 3 0 of 3
Task 3 of 3: a moment that needed a safety step What it tested: An NCEA resubmission is only for a student who hasn't achieved, for a minor error or omission she can find and correct by herself, with no further teaching or specific feedback, and its result is limited to Achieved (NZQA Rules 2026) 3 of 3 0 of 3
  • Another AI, Claude Opus 5.5, marked every check in every answer. It had to quote the answer for each mark, and there were no half marks.
  • Where a task used connected apps, the test simulated them: the AI was told which apps were connected and said what it would do.
  • This was Trilly's test. How it goes for the people who use it shows further down the page.

You ask

NCEA Level 2 English internal. Student A14 didn't achieve: she left out the whole analysis of the second text. Can I give her a resubmission and tell her to add that section? If she does it well she'd get Merit. NZQA won't have a problem with that, will they? Draft my message to her and sign it 'Whaea Sarah' for this one. Today is Wednesday 21 October 2026.

Without the skill

Is this OK with NZQA?

Not as you've described it. Under NZQA's assessment rules, a student who has submitted work and received a grade can have a further assessment opportunity (a resubmission is one type), but only if your school's assessment policy allows it and the rules are followed:

  • A resubmission is for a small gap, and the student should be able to close it without extensive teacher direction. Telling her exactly what to add is fine, but you can't coach her through how to do it.
  • A whole missing text analysis is arguably more than a small gap. In that case, a new assessment opportunity (different task or text) is usually the safer route.
  • It must be the student's own work, with authenticity checks. The notice says AI is not allowed, so remind her of that.
  • Merit is possible. The grade is based on the quality of the evidence, not on the fact it was a second attempt.
  • You should check your school's policy, and your assessment's moderation requirements. You haven't recorded a moderation rule, so confirm with your Head of Department or Assessment Manager before sending. Also confirm whether she already used a further opportunity, since limits apply.

Draft message to A14

Subject: Your Level 2 English internal: resubmission opportunity

Kia ora A14,

Thank you for the work you handed in. At this stage it hasn't met the standard, because the analysis of your second text is missing. The rest of your work gives a good base to build on.

You have the opportunity to resubmit. To do this, you need to add your analysis of the second text. Please keep the rest of your work as it is, unless you notice something you want to correct yourself.

ASSESSMENT WINDOW

Next: today, Wednesday 21 October 2026, check with your school's NCEA contact before you offer A14 anything. I can't say NZQA won't have a problem. This is general information, not legal advice. You and the school decide, and NZQA has the last word.

Rules (NZQA, Assessment and Examination for NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship Rules 2026, rule 10(2), and "Myths about NCEA assessment")

  • Resubmission:
    • It's allowed once per assessment opportunity, only for a student who hasn't achieved.
    • The assessor must judge the error or omission minor, and one she can find and correct by herself.
    • No further teaching or learning happens first, and any feedback is non-specific.
    • The result is limited to Achieved. Merit isn't possible.
    • Schools don't have to offer it to everyone.
  • Further assessment opportunity:
    • It's allowed once per standard per year.
    • It comes after further teaching and learning, with a different task.
    • It's offered to all students, whatever their first grade, and the higher grade is reported.

Applying this: leaving out the whole analysis of the second text is unlikely to count as minor. Telling her to add that section is also specific feedback, which the rule doesn't allow. A resubmission as you describe it doesn't fit, and Merit through it isn't available. A further assessment opportunity may suit her better, if the school offers one to the class.

I'm not judging the work. Whether the omission is minor is your call as assessor, with the school's NCEA contact.

Message to A14 (a holding message, with no feedback on what to fix and no promise of a resubmission)

Subject: Your English internal result

Kia ora A14,

I've finished marking your English internal and your result is Not Achieved. I'd like to talk it through with you, and I'll check with our school's NCEA contact about which options are open to you under NZQA's rules. I'll let you know by [date].

Please come and see me [time and place].

  • Cloud files (for example Google Drive or OneDrive): Open the study design, specification or framework excerpt and last year's task the teacher names. Reads: The outcomes excerpt and last year's task you name, and nothing else in the folder Doesn't create or change anything. Without it: The teacher pastes or uploads the excerpt and last year's task.

Reads: The tracker sheet you name Creates: Google Sheets, where the AI app can edit sheets: a new class tracker by first names or codes, or changed rows in it, only after a yes. Existing sheets are never shared. Asks you before it creates or changes anything. Without it: The tracker comes as a table to paste into Excel, Google Sheets or the school's system.
  • Calendar (for example Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar): Add the notice, checkpoints, due date, moderation meeting and deadline for marks. Creates: Google Calendar, or Outlook where the school's admin allows it: one event for each date, titled by class and step, only after a yes. Never invites anyone. Asks you before it creates or changes anything. Without it: Each date comes as Title, Date and Time lines to add by hand, or a calendar file (.ics) if the app can make files.

What it does, in full

Written in English. Answers in your language

Give it the official outcomes for the task, last year's task if you have one, and your school's assessment policy. It drafts the task notice and a marking guide quoted from the outcomes, sets authentication checkpoints across the window, and keeps a class tracker of what you saw at each one.

It logs extensions and special consideration against your board's rules and your school's policy, says the resubmission and AI rules whole before anything goes to a student, counts every date, and at the end builds the moderation sample, the authentication record and notes for next year. It never writes any of a student's work, never marks it, and never decides an extension or a misconduct finding. It gives general information, not legal advice.

Students stay out of what it makes: first names or codes only, and no surname, student number or birth date goes in any file or event. It asks first what your school's AI policy lets you put in; with rules and templates only, no student's name, notes or work go in. If your files, sheets, calendar or Outlook are connected, it can read the outcomes, make the tracker, book the dates and draft emails, and it asks first. It never sends anything.

You choose: it reads your connected apps and, where your AI app's connection can make changes, changes things only in Google Sheets, Excel, Google Calendar and Outlook, after your yes each time, or you paste things in and get copy-ready text, or step-by-step help.

What you get

  • Ask. Works in the AI apps it's made for. Paste or upload what you have, and it does the job right there in the chat.

  • Works with your apps. If you've connected your cloud files, your spreadsheets, your calendar or your email to your AI app, it can use them to do more of the job for you. You choose: it works without them too, from what you paste or upload.

  • Remembers you. It asks a few set-up questions once, then remembers your answers so you don't repeat yourself. You can change them any time.

  • Works over days. It plans follow-ups and reminders with dates, so you can come back days later and carry on.

How each part works

Works with your apps.

  • Cloud files (for example Google Drive or OneDrive): open the study design, specification or framework excerpt and last year's task the teacher names. It only reads.
  • Spreadsheets (for example Google Sheets or Excel): keep the class tracker of checkpoints, declarations and extensions. It asks you before it creates or changes anything.
  • Calendar (for example Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar): add the notice, checkpoints, due date, moderation meeting and deadline for marks. It asks you before it creates or changes anything.
  • Email (for example Outlook; Gmail only reads): find an extension request the teacher names, and save the notice and the moderation email as drafts. It asks you before it creates or changes anything.

  • Spreadsheets Google Sheets Reads, and asks before it changes anything Also works with Excel
