What you need to chase an overdue invoice

  • The invoice. Its number, the amount and the day it was due. Check that nothing has come in since you last looked.
  • Your contract. Read it first. It may set the payment date, a late fee or an interest rate.
  • Who owes you. Find out who owns the business, as it may not be the person you dealt with.
  • Where you trade. In Australia, the government's guide says to put a late interest rate in your letter only if your contract sets one. In the UK, you can charge a business that pays late 8% plus the Bank of England base rate, unless your contract sets a different rate. You can also charge it a fixed sum of £40, £70 or £100, depending on the debt.
  • Your next step. Start with a friendly reminder, as it may be an oversight. If that fails, send a letter of demand: how much, what for and by when. Only mention action you're prepared to take.

Trading somewhere else? Check your government's business pages first.
